The purpose of the scheme was to turn the stretch of the A11 between Fiveways and Thetford into a dual carriageway. The A11 is a busy road that links London and Norfolk and the aims of the project are to reduce congestion, provide additional capacity and improve road safety.
Another key component of the scheme is minimising the impact of the new road on the surrounding Breckland Heaths, a special conservation area covering parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. This is where our installation of noise-reducing environmental fencing comes in. The acoustic panels are situated adjacent to specially installed bat bridges.
We carried out a similar job for the DP World London Gateway project in 2013, but noise-reducing fencing is not only used in road infrastructure projects: we have also been commissioned by supermarkets and large outlets to install this type of fencing in order to reduce the noise impact on their neighbours. In addition, environmental fencing can be used to reduce pollution at car parks, sports fields, schools, business parks and 24-hour distribution depots.
As ever, we finished the A11 acoustic fencing project on time and to budget. The entire scheme was completed in late 2014, and the new dual carriageway has been open to traffic since December.
